If you’re anything like me, you’ve watched in horror and with a deep sadness at the devastating fallout from Hurricane Helen, which has claimed over 130 lives (that we know of) and torn to the ground entire towns.
It’s heartbreaking, and the impact is just starting to be felt - there’s not a chance that any of us have a concept of how long rebuilding will be for these families. Words fail me.
At this specific moment, I know so many of us want to help but feel helpless. However, we are equipped to do several powerful things:
PRAY.
I am a praying person, and I know many of you are. Never be deterred by the “thoughts and prayers are not enough” contingent. Prayer is powerful, and now is a moment to be lifting up the people who are hurting. Without ceasing.
Here is one that is easy to memorize, pulled from the 1928 Book of Common Prayer.
In Time of Calamity.
OGOD, merciful and compassionate, who art ever ready to hear the prayers of those who put their trust in thee; Graciously hearken to us who call upon thee, and grant us thy help in this our need; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
DONATE.
I thought it would be beneficial to put together a list of organizations/charities/churches that have boots on the ground in the impacted areas so you know precisely where your money is going.
A very generous member of this community, Jackie, offered to spend some time vetting and listing out recommended sources of help. I am so grateful for her.
We have put together a Google Doc that lists the organization name, category of help, contact information, the primary area they are servicing, where you donate, their website, and their social media contacts.
SHARE INFORMATION WITH THOSE IN OUR SIMILAR SITUATION.
This document is easy to share and pass along. I know many are looking for tangible and accessible information, so please feel free to pass it along to anyone you know who has it in their heart and on their mind that they want to be part of this recovery.
Let’s be the hands and feet of Christ during this difficult time.
Thank you so much for this, I will share
Thanks for sharing info and for shining a light on the needs of those impacted by the flooding in Appalachia. The main stream media has not covered much. Do you also have a list of organizations to donate to in northeast TN? The area there across the mountain from Asheville was devastated, too.
