Dawn Dispatch

June 11th, 2025

Good morning and happy Wednesday, everyone! We made it to the middle of the week, and I hope you’re staying cool and enjoying your summer break (lots of blow-up pools, floaties, and popsicles happening over here!)

Let’s jump into the June 11th installment of the Dawn Dispatch!

Trump Deploys Marines to Los Angeles Amid Immigration Protests

President Trump has mobilized 700 Marines and 4,000 National Guard troops to Los Angeles in response to protests against federal immigration raids. The deployment marks an extraordinary use of military force for domestic law enforcement operations.

California Governor Gavin Newsom called the deployment “unlawful” and filed an emergency lawsuit to block the military presence, arguing it violates state sovereignty and the 10th Amendment. The state will seek a temporary restraining order in federal court on Thursday.

Speaking at Fort Bragg to celebrate the Army’s 250th birthday, Trump defended the deployment, calling the protests “a full-blown assault on peace, public order and national sovereignty, carried out by rioters bearing foreign flags.” He vowed that “generations of Army heroes did not shed their blood on distant shores only to watch our country be destroyed by invasion and a third-world country.

Ukraine Shows Massive Drone Attack on Russia

Russia launched its largest overnight drone attack of the war on Monday, firing 479 drones and missiles at Ukraine in what officials called a record-breaking assault. Ukrainian air defenses shot down 292 projectiles and jammed 187 others. The attack targeted multiple regions, including Kyiv, Rivne, and Kharkiv.

This follows Ukraine’s devastating “Operation Spider’s Web” from June 1st, where Ukrainian drones smuggled into Russia destroyed over 40 strategic bombers at airbases deep inside Russian territory, including locations in Siberia over 2,500 miles from Ukraine’s borders. The warring sides also began a prisoner exchange involving hundreds of soldiers - one of the few concrete results from peace talks held last week in Istanbul.
